Legislative breakfast to include discussion of issues by candidates
BIG RAPIDS — The Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce will host the 2018 Legislative Breakfast 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, October 12, at the Miller Wing of the Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District, located at 15670 190th Ave. in Big Rapids.
During this panel event, moderated by Big Rapids Mayor and chamber Ambassador Thomas Hogenson, candidates will have the opportunity to discuss issues followed by a brief question and answer forum. Candidates representing all major parties in various levels of our legislature have been invited to this event. Candidates currently scheduled to attend include:

Walking tour of conservation project
REED CITY — The Cadilac Land Conservancy is hosting a walking tour of the Zandstra Easement conservation project in Osceola County. It will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.
The event will include a look at the revitalization project of the 240-acre easement, walking tour (with golf carts available) and light refreshments. Please bring your own chair.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

REED CITY — St. Paul Lutheran Church is hosting a Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 20.
A bake sale and bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a luncheon will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and a raffle drawing will be held at 1 p.m.
Dinner to fun gifts for youth
REED CITY — Reed City United Methodist Church is hosting a pulled pork dinner on Friday, Oct. 26. The proceeds will provide Christmas gifts for youth at Eagle Village.
The dinner, which will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., includes “naked” pulled pork sandwich, sauces, coleslaw, green beans, baked beans, beverage and dessert. Cost is by freewill offering.

Free blood pressure clinics
EVART— Osceola County Commission on Aging is offering free blood pressure clinics for adults 60 years and older. Monthly blood pressure screenings will be conducted at the OCCOA meal sites in Evart, Marion and Tustin.
Evart’s clinic will be held on the second Tuesday every month, 10 a.m. to noon. The Evart meal site is located at 732 West Seventh St. (U.S. 10).

REED CITY— Road to Recovery is an American Cancer Society volunteer-based program that provides transportation for cancer patients to and from their treatments. Volunteer drivers transport patients from their home to cancer treatment centers, doctor visits and other cancer-related appointments.
The American Cancer Society is working with Spectrum Health Reed City Hospital, Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center to recruit volunteer drivers and coordinators from Osceola and its surrounding counties to help drive cancer patients to and from their treatment. All volunteers’ need is a few hours during the week and a desire to make a difference.

CADILLAC— Free limited health care services are available in Cadillac for residents of Wexford, Missaukee and parts of Osceola and Lake counties with low income and no health insurance. Weekly health clinics are scheduled based on the availability of volunteer healthcare providers. New patients need to call for an eligibility appointment.
Medication assistance may be available through the Stehouwer Free Clinic. Qualified applicants must have a Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital affiliated provider and meet guidelines set by pharmaceutical companies. Eligibility appointments are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (closed noon to 1 p.m.)
