CHASE — D Bar D Ranch in Chase is helping area cancer patients with its eighth annual Ride for a Cure fundraiser the weekend of September 14-16. The highlight of the weekend of events will be multiple horseback trail rides and horse-drawn wagon rides on Saturday.
The $25-per-person event benefits Spectrum Health’s Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center in Reed City. Additional donations are welcome.
“The support from our ranch family, our volunteers and the community has been incredible,” said Don Beach, D Bar D Ranch owner and trail boss. “Cancer affects all of us in one way or another, and it has personally affected us at the ranch. So we do this to help other cancer patients, and to thank those at the cancer center who devote their careers to the important work of helping treat patients.”
A four-hour trail ride will take place on Saturday beginning at noon, with a two-hour ride starting at 2 p.m. Wagon rides are also available for those without a horse and have proved so popular that a fourth wagon has been added this year.
Many participants camp at the ranch and enjoy a full weekend of activities, including entertainment Friday evening by the Borderline Band, and Saturday evening by Stolen Horses Band. A silent auction tent will operate throughout the weekend. The event concludes with a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Jen Ames, new practice manager of the Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center, said, “I want to express my gratitude for all that Don and the great team at D Bar D Ranch do to help and support our patients. The Ride for a Cure has grown into an amazing event and we join the ranch staff in inviting everyone to enjoy the fun next weekend and contribute to this great cause.”
Last year the Ride for a Cure raised more than $24,000 for the cancer center and its patients. The 2017 event attracted a record of approximately 175 riders and horses, along with those who took part in the wagon rides. More than 90 people camped at the ranch during the weekend.
