DETROIT — They’ve made quite a name for themselves in the last decade when it comes to high school football success.
Now, the boss is being honored for his work and the work his coaches and players have put in.
Reed City High School varsity football coach Monty Price has been named the Detroit Lions/Farm Bureau Insurance Coach of the Week for Week 6 of the prep season.
Price, in his 24th year of coaching overall and 20th at Reed City, was honored to learn of the award.
“I would have never thought I’d be honored in this way,” Price said. “It’s very humbling and certainly a great honor.”
Price has compiled a 142-63 record in 19-plus season at Reed City after coaching stints at Chippewa Hills and Montabella.
The Coyotes are nearing their eighth straight Central State Activities Association titled under Price, to go along with three MHSAA district titles and a regional championship, earned last fall
Reed City will be in the playoffs for the ninth straight season this fall and haven’t had a losing season since 2009.
That speaks to the program that Price has built.
“I am very honored that they think highly of our program,” Price said. “It’s about the kids and always be about the kids but sometimes the coaches get rewarded, too.
“I’d like to thank them all for the work and dedication they’ve given to the program over the years.”
Each week, one coach that demonstrates success on and off the field, develops players’ character, discipline and football skill in addition to emphasizing player safety and health in their program will be recognized by the Coach of the Year program.
Each winning coach during the regular season will receive a $2,000 donation his school’s football program and a Gatorade performance package.
At the conclusion of the season, the Lions will select a High School Coach of the Year that will $4,000 for their program.
Each weekly winner receives a certificate signed by Lions head coach Matt Patricia, NFL commissioner Roger Goddell, a personalized game ball as well as acknowledgement at a Lions home game.
Reed City (6-0 overall) is at Central Montcalm on Friday. A win over the Hornets guarantees the Coyotes at least a share of the league crown.
