SEARS — Ronald James Higgins, of Sears, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly Sunday, July 1, 2018, while tending to his hay field. He was 74.
Ron was born July 24, 1943, in Saginaw, to Wesley Henry and Flora Eleanor (Eastman) Higgins. He graduated from Farwell High School in 1963, and after graduation helped his father with his dairy business. Ron married Barbara Kay Gaffney on February 14, 1970, in Evart and raised three beautiful young ladies. He went to work for CSX Railroad in 1970 and worked 35 years for them before retiring in 2005, then started farming. Mr. Higgins was a Sears area resident since 1974 and was a member of Barryton and Sears Church of God, the Evart Car Club, and was active in the Osceola County Commission on Aging.
Ron is survived by his wife, Barbara Kay Higgins of Sears, daughters Ronda (Ronald) Hamersley of Danville, Indiana, and Kathy (James) Ray of Anderson, Indiana, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four sisters, Sharyn (Dave) Wiley of Portage, Michigan, Joyce Higgins of Clare, Lynette “Susie” Higgins of Clare, Debbie (Bob) Smith of Farwell, five brothers, Larry Higgins of Farwell, Tim Higgins of Farwell, Rick (Jodi) Higgins of Farwell, Randy Higgins of Florida, Scott (Connie) Higgins of Farwell, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Higgins was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service honoring Ronald James Higgins will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at the Sears Church of God with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church. Pastor Scott McDonald and Pastor Dick Latham will officiate. Interment will be later in Orient Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Osceola County Commission on Aging.
