MARION — John R. Atkins, of Marion, passed away peacefully at his home in Hartwick Township, Osceola County, Michigan, Thursday, August 30, 2018. He was 69 and was known as “Bargain John, seller of all.”
Mr. Atkins was born January 15, 1949 in Columbus, Mississippi to Sly John and Lois Louise (Terrell) Atkins. He graduated from Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights in 1968. John moved to the Evart area from Dearborn Heights in 1971. He retired from the Osceola County Road Commission where he worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator and was elected in 2005 as a Commissioner for the Osceola County Road Commission where he served for six years. John enjoyed the outdoors and motorsports, hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, driving race cars and mud trucks.
John is survived by his five children, Shawn Michael (Tammy) Atkins of Lake City, Tammy Lynn (Scott) Allen of Lake City, David John Atkins of Lake City, Jackie Ann Heistand of Lake City, Chip Rolland (Stacy) Atkins of Lake City, eleven grandchildren, special friend, Julie and her daughter, Jessica, and two half-sisters, Brenda (Jim) Wood, of Columbus, Mississippi, and Nell Stewart of Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Bobby Atkins.
Funeral Services honoring John Ray Atkins will be held at 1 p.m Tuesday, September 4 at the Corey Funeral Home in Evart. Visitation will be Monday, September 3, 6 to 8 p.m. and 11 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Cherry Valley Cemetery in Hartwick Township.
